The Evolution / Revolution of The Abrasive Flap DiscThe object of the invention of the abrasive flap disc was to increase life and efficiency of the abrasive material used in the surface preparation of fabricated metal. Up until the mid 1990’s,the most common method was the use of resin bonded abrasive grinding wheels and resin fibresanding discs. With the invention of the abrasive flap disc, all that has changed.The design of a rotary abrasive disc requires balancing the operational life of the disc against the “aggressiveness” (how much surface material is removed) of the abrasive. The old method required a grinding wheel to “knock” the weld down and a resin fibre disc to sand the weld so as to blend the two pieces of metal together. Aside from the inefficiency of the two-step process, resin fibre discs proved to have to glaring weakness: glazing and loading.A resin fibre disc has large and small abrasive particles bonded to a fibre substrate. During use, the large abrasive particles, which are first to contact the work surface, begin to wear and become dull. This leads to flat spots on the disc. The flattened particles, too dull to cut, “ride” on the work surface and prevent the smaller, still sharp, abrasive particles from contacting the work surface. This is referred to as “glazing”. Also, the material removed from the work piece tends to become lodged between the large abrasive particles, “loading” the abrasive and preventing it from cutting the surface. Both of these conditions render the disc useless, requiring the operator to replace the disc several times due to wear.Since the flap disc eliminates loading and glazing, the two-step process of grinding wheel and fibre disc, the work/performance ratio is greatly increased.
